MilSpouse (First) Friday Fill-In #76

It's been a while since I linked up with Wife of a Sailor, so I felt like this morning was a great opportunity.

What's one thing this past month you would have changed?
Perhaps how I handled a situation.. maybe. I don't do well with something I perceive to be unfair, and I also don't handle it well when I think someone may be upset with me, particularly when I don't think it's for a good reason. I've let that bother me a lot during the past month, and I'm trying really hard to let it go.

What was your favorite thing that happened in October?
I learned to sew! So far, I've made a dress for KB, 3 submarine baby blankets, and a bunch of pacifier loveys. I have to say, I got that idea from my mother-in-law, who suggested one for Garrett. He throws his paci out of the bed, and I was sick of him waking up to find it. So, she suggested a little lovey to attach a ribbon and then snap the pacifier to. It worked like a charm, and Garrett finally attached to something other than me! Subby (because, obviously, it's in the shape of a submarine) goes with us everywhere, and G snuggles up with it at night. I feel like this is the most genius idea ever, and I'm shocked there aren't that many available out there. I think MIL is planning to make some shaped like footballs, which is a great idea. There aren't that many things that people [Daddies] really want their little boys to attach to, and footballs are socially acceptable (Wink, wink.. I don't subscribe to that idea at all.. I'm being ironic. Please nobody go off on me for subscribing to traditional gender roles.) Submarines are manly, too!

So now that I've shamelessly plugged myself and MIL, check out our shops! MIL does mostly Boutique hairbows and accessories for little girls, and I'm doing baby blankets and loveys.

What dish makes the Thanksgiving holiday for you?
My Mom's dressing. I don't have the recipe yet, but I am going to need it since Honey's office is supposed to bring dressings and stuffings to the command Thanksgiving dinner. Anyway, it's perfect. All celery-y, and egg-y, and just moist enough to eat alone, but perfectly tasty with gravy or cranberries. Absolutely. Perfect.

Will you be participating in MilSpouse Secret Santa?
No, I don't think so. I would like to, but I feel like I already have too much on my plate right now.

What are you looking forward to in December?
Having a vendor booth in my first craft show! My friend Erin is pretty talented with her sewing and embroidery machines, so we are going to have a booth to sell baby items. I do blankets and loveys, and she does bibs and burp cloths. If we get super ambitious, we're going to try and do some clothes, too. I can't wait!

Mommy Confession

Here's a confession post, and it's something I feel like I'm not supposed to say.

I really miss working.

Don't worry, I can already feel the mental slaps from hundreds of women, many of my friends, coming my way.

I never, ever expected that I'd be a stay at home mom. To be really honest, I never expected that I would have that luxury. I am incredibly blessed to be able to stay at home with my babies, and I know that. But I really, really miss working.

I suppose the grass is always greener. I know full well that if I had a 40 hour a week job, I would want nothing more than to spend all day, every day with my beautiful babies. And to be honest again, I don't really want to *not* be with them, either. There's no way I would give up watching all the firsts I've been able to watch happen! I can't stand the thought of someone else spending all day with my babies while we are financially able to let me do that.

But on the other hand... I miss leaving the house every day. I miss the majority of my conversation taking place with an adult. As much as I love repeating every single word KB says, which I do, (I did it just because it felt natural, but as it turns out, it really helps their verbal abilities. Who knew?!) I sometimes would just enjoy quiet. I sort of envy people who get to spend a little time in traffic, alone with their thoughts.

I know what's caused this. Besides the fact that it's been a little over three years since I held a full-time job, my new problem is that I haven't made SAHM/W friends in Memphis yet. Memphis isn't a typical military city, so there aren't a million wives and kids hanging out while their husbands/daddies are working. Jason hasn't checked in to the command yet, so I haven't met any of the wives of his coworkers.

The coolest thing ever would be to find a job where I could take my babies with me. I can hold off until they start school if I need to, but if anybody has any ideas, just let me know!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #71

1. What’s one thing in the past month you would have changed?
- I can't think of anything that I would have changed in April, to be honest. Things are falling into place exactly as they should be, whether I'm ready for them or not.
2. What was your favorite thing that happened in April?
- My mom came to spend a few weeks with us to help me with the babies and help me get ready to move back to Tennessee.
3. What are your plans for Memorial Day?
- I haven't thought anywhere near that far ahead yet. I'll be in Mississippi visiting family and getting ready to move into our new house!
4. Have you ever traveled Space A? If yes, where... if no, would you ever try it?
- I am a Space A expert! I love the program, and I think it's one of the best benefits we have as military spouses, especially those of us who are overseas and can fly without our sponsors. I actually flew Space A long before I was a MilSpouse. My Stepmom is active duty AF, and Dad is retired. Our entire family (7 of us!) flew Space A to Germany right after I graduated college. Since becoming a MilSpouse myself, I've flown between Guam, Hawaii, and California numerous times, and then from Mississippi to Maryland and back again. Go do it! And if you have questions, feel free to ask!
5. What are you looking forward to in May?
- While I'm not looking forward to leaving my Honey behind, I am looking forward to getting back to Mississippi. We have a new house to get into, family and friends to visit, etc. And speaking of friends to visit, my very best friend will have her first baby, a boy, this month! I'm so, so very excited for her and I can't wait to meet little Samuel!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #70

1. What’s one thing in the past month you would have changed?
Honey's work schedule. I know that nobody can help it.. it's what Shipyard does to a crew, but it's sucked something fierce.
2. What was your favorite thing that happened in March?
Obviously.
3. Check your phone... who was the last person you called and what is your favorite thing about them?
Well, the person I called was Honey, and there isn't enough space to write my favorite things about him. The number I called was the Wardroom, and I simply don't have a favorite thing about it. I have a lot of not favorite things about it, though ;)
4. If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?
That depends on the day. Today I would have been lavender. I'm happy and pleasant, but not as bright and fun as I'd like to be. On those days I'm a bright turquoise.
5. What are you looking forward to in April?
Getting my body back! Or, rather, getting a nice body to begin with.. Since I'm officially forever done with having babies, I'm really going to get to work. I start Boot Camp on April 30, and I'm looking forward to having my butt kicked around a bit.

25 Questions for a Military Spouse

I just saw this cute questionnaire, (think old MySpace style) over at  The Misadventures of Mrs. Duh and I thought it sounded like fun. Besides, I haven't blogged in a while for one thing, and for another, it's nap time :)  Ahhh, quiet in my house!

1. How did you and your spouse meet?

You want the truth? Because we've been lying about it for years. As it turns out, lots of people we know have met their significant others online, so it's not as big of a deal anymore. We met online.

We both had profiles on some cheesy dating site, but neither of us were willing to actually pay for it. So, I think I saw his first and did whatever that site's version of Facebook poking was, and then he went and found me on Facebook. He knew that my name was Emily and that I went to Ole Miss. That was it. So he searched through all 300 something Emily's until he found me, and luckily my profiles pictures matched. We messaged back and forth for a few days, then talked for a few days, then he drove down to Oxford and we went out.

The rest of our story is very long.. We dated for 2 months, broke up because I was an idiot, didn't speak for 2 years, got back together in January 09, and got married 3 months later. I'll have to write about that some day :)

September 06, Jason's first Ole Miss game

2. How old were you when you met?

He was 22 and I was 21. We spent my 22nd birthday together shortly after we met, though.

3. How long have you been together?

Three years now, but we met almost five and a half years ago.

4. Where are you and your spouse originally from?

I'm from a tiny town in central Mississippi called Florence, and he's a Navy brat. He was born in Idaho where his mother's family still lives, and has lived all over. His dad retired from the Navy when he was in middle school, and they settled down in a Northwest Tennessee town called Dyersburg.

5. How did you feel about him joining the military?

He had already joined when we met, but he hadn't gone to OCS yet. This was actually part of the reason I dumped him.. I wasn't convinced I wanted to follow him around the world. Silly me ;)

6. Where did your spouse go to basic training?

He attended OCS in Pensacola, Florida, then Nuclear Power School and Prototype in Charleston, SC, then Sub School in Groton, CT.

7. Has your spouse ever been deployed?

Why yes, he has.. In our three years attached to this command, his first, he's been actually deployed three times, but we've done five big-ish separations for other boat movement.

8. Ever been to his promotion ceremony?

I'm very bitter about this, but no. His first one took place under the water somewhere, and his most recent one took place in the Shipyard, where I don't have clearance to be.

9. How long have you been a military wife?

Two years, nine months and six days.

10. Did you marry him before or after he joined?

After he joined and went through all of those tedious schools, but right before he left for his first duty station.

11. How did your husband propose?

Ah, such a sweet story..  We decided to get married with very little time to spare before he left for Guam. I knew he had the ring, but I suggested that we go on and do a tiny little ceremony before he left, and do our big wedding months later. He almost didn't go through with his planned proposal since we had already decided to get married, but my wonderful best friend told him he HAD TO. So here's what he did.

He kept telling me to not make plans for Wednesday, so I knew it was going to be then. Well, early in the week, I made dinner plans for the two of us to meet up with two of my best friends at our favorite restaurant on Tuesday. I met him and the best friends there right after work.. which meant work clothes, no make up, etc.

One of my best friends happens to be a manager at this restaurant, and after we had all eaten, he announced that he wanted dessert.. Did anyone else? This place makes fantastic cakes, so I piped up for a slice of cake. He came back, and this is what he had:

Well, I can't find a picture of just the cake on my computer, so an engagement photo will have to do. My best friend was holding this cake, and set it down in front of me. Jason was on my left, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.  My face looked like this:

See how cute I am with no make up, and my hair just hanging out? Yeah, after I got over the complete shock that he had actually surprised me, and after I got over how gorgeous the ring was, I was annoyed that no one had warned me to wear make up.

12. Where did you get married?

Under a white columned pavilion, beside a lake in Grenada, Mississippi.

13. How old were you when you got married?

I was 24 and he was 25.

14. Did he wear his uniform on your wedding day?

Nope. This was supposed to be our quick little ceremony, not the whole shebang. He planned to wear his uniform at our big one, which never took place.

15. Where are you and your spouse currently stationed?

At Pearl Harbor, the Navy's Best Homeport! Heh.. those signs crack me up. But really, we do love it here.

16. Do you live on base?

Nope. Base housing for his paygrade and for how many children we had when we got here (1) was crap. We live in beautiful, gorgeous, Kaneohe.

17. How long were you married when you had to go through your first separation?

Ha. A grand total of seven days. Yes, seven. One week. He flew to Guam on April 12, and I followed him in early July.

18. What is your favorite base so far?

I do really like Pearl Harbor. San Diego is nice, too. The only other Navy bases I've experienced are Big Navy Guam, New London, CT and NAS Millington in TN. So yes, Pearl Harbor wins.

19. Do you think your spouse looks good in his uniform?

Are you kidding me?! Those Summer Whites make me get all prickly inside. Twitterpated, even.  And I won't even get started on Dress Whites. Lord, have mercy!

20. Do you think military life is more advanced than civilian life?

I don't know how to respond to "advanced". It's different, and very unique. It takes a special breed of woman to do this well.

21. Do you like the benefits you receive as a military spouse?

Um, who is going to say no to good, cheap healthcare, tax-free grocery shopping, free airfare on military flights, cheap lodging all around the world, and the opportunity to actually take advantage of said cheap lodging??  Not me. Yes, I appreciate those benefits!

22. Do you have a lot of military wife friends?

I do now, both in the form of ladies I've met since I became one, and friends I've always had who became MilSpouses themselves. I've made some wonderful friendships since I left Mississippi, and I wouldn't trade them for the world!

23. What is the hardest part of military life?

For me, the most obvious answer is being far away from my family, especially during tough times. Like when my first baby was due and my husband was about to deploy, or when my grandmother's brother passed away and I couldn't go home for the funeral.. Or now, when my Jason's grandmother and my own great-grandmother are neither fairing well, and we know we can't do anything to help, and we won't be able to attend funerals if they pass away.

24. Do you own military wife stuff?

Hmm.. I do have some Navy Victoria's Secret pj's, but they don't say "Navy Wife" or anything. I also have an "I Love My Sailor" magnet. I think some things are cute, but I'm not the type to buy them for myself.

25. Do you support your spouse being in the military?

That's my job. I support whatever makes him happy. As long as what makes him happy is driving a multi-billion dollar piece of submerged steel, then I will support him being in the military.

The Families We Choose

It's true that no one can ever take the place of the people who give birth to you, raise you, love you unconditionally.

That's a fact.

Unless, of course, you were adopted, then it isn't the people who birth you that matter.

Or, unless you just plain out don't like your family, and then they don't matter even though they raised you.. but I'm already getting off track.

What I mean is that when you have a family that you really love, and even really like, no one could ever take the place of them in your heart.

But when you live 4,200 miles away from your closest family member, the holidays can be tough.

So what do you do?

You create your own little family, and you get to choose who is in it!

This year we had a bunch of friends over for (what we have now decided was) the First Annual Frederick Christmas Eve Wine Party. We had a bunch of food, too many bottles of wine to count, and so, so much fun. It was so nice to be surrounded with most of the people who matter in our lives.

Sure.. every single one of them was a member of our Ward Room, but hey.. your boat family is supposed to be like your family, right??  I'm so glad that our's really is.

While Jason and I are both very excited about being in Tennessee next year, we are going to miss this group of people we've come to care so much for. I'm surprisingly glad that we extended (twice now, actually) so that we'll get more time with them.

And, while we're very glad that we'll finally be close to our families and old friends again, it will be nice to know that we have friends all over the country, and eventually, all over the world.

Yes, Navy.. I am saying that I'm grateful to you for providing us with that opportunity.

And don't tell anyone, but I'm also grateful that I'll get to spend the majority of my life on a beach somewhere. That part doesn't suck, either.

I'm Back! And Vacation Part I

Oh my goodness, it's been so long since I last wrote. I plan on getting back to the 10 Day You Challenge just as soon as I have 10 days to devote. Our past month has been a whirlwind, and it was wonderful! We got to see our friends, our family, and most importantly to Katie Beth, our pets! Kidding about that last part.. Katie Beth made some serious bonds with her grandparents and great grandparents over the last month, and that is what I'm most grateful for.  So I'm going to chronicle our trip here, and I hope you don't mind. I won't do it all at one time, I promise :)

KB enjoying a little Yo Gabba Gabba on the flight

The first leg of our trip was in San Diego. Honey was asked to attend a Submariner conference - TANG: Tactical Advancements for the Next Generation. All I know is that he had a great time, made some awesome business connections, and was able to voice some ideas for the advancement of the submarine force.

While he was busy doing all that, KB and I explored the city. Oh. My. Gosh. I LOVED San Diego! Ever since we've been married, I've told Honey that I don't want to live on the West Coast.. I just don't feel like I'm a West Coast type of girl. And I'm still not, but San Diego could really change my mind. There was so much to do, the weather was perfect, and the city is so baby and pet friendly. There were dogs (on leashes, being properly cared for) everywhere! And all of their owners were nice enough to let my toddler squeal and pet them.

One of the dogs that KB fell in love with upon first sight. This was a such a sweet bull dog!

As for the baby friendly thing, oh wow! San Diegans love babies! Everywhere we went, men and women spoke to KB, commented on her, and made me feel like I have the world's most precious baby. (Which, obviously, I do..)  I loved that there is a Children's Museum that gets amazing reviews. We didn't go because I think KB was still just a little young to appreciate it. If she had been even 6 months younger, we would have gone and stayed all day.

Loving the giraffe on the carousel at Sea Port Village

Another high point for us was Sea World. Since we went during November, it was incredibly slow. We didn't feel over crowded, which was awesome. We got to see some pretty cute penguins, and KB was entranced. The Shamu show was a lot of fun, but not quite as exciting as I think they used to be since the trainers no longer get in the water with the orcas.

OMGoodness!  PENGUINS!!
Big squeals for Shamu and friends

The coolest part of Sea World was that it was FREE. Yep, free. Sea World, Busch Gardens, and a few other places take part in the Heroes Salute program, which allows service members and 3 dependents to attend one of the parks for free once a year. For more information, go here : http://www.herosalute.com/

Since Jason and I are such foodies, we loved the restaurant scene in San Diego. We were excited about *real* Mexican food, which you just can't get in Hawaii. We ate at some other great places too, like the Broken Yolk Cafe, Nicky Rotten's, and this hole in the wall pizza joint called Gaslamp Pizza. All of it was great stuff!

Loving the Mexican!

We had an amazing time in San Diego. I was so happy to wear jackets and jeans and not sweat in November, but to still have a great view of some ocean. So, from here on out, San Diego will be duly considered for future duty stations.

The 10 Day You Challenge - Day 1!

I've been looking for a reason to write, and I can't seem to think of anything. I think that's probably because my brain is SO full of things, I don't know where to start. Mrs. Duh is doing the same over on her page, and I thought it sounded like fun. So here we go!

Day One - Ten Secrets

1.  I can't sleep with doors open.  At least I used to not be able to. Jason broke me of having to have the closet doors closed, but the bedroom door is still a problem.

2.  Speaking of sleeping, which happens at night...  when I go to the bathroom and then come back to bed, I have to resist the urge to jump the last foot to the bed. I'm still scared that something is going to grab me from under the bed.

3.  I like teen fiction novels far more than I like adult ones.

4.  I've had my favorite pair of sweat pants since I was 18. The holes make them more comfy!

5.  I can't watch scary movies, and if I watch something on tv about ghosts, I don't sleep well that night.

6.  I once went without shaving my legs for 2 months, at which point my Dad told me I was disgusting and made me go shave. Hey, it was winter time, and I was only 14.. nobody was touching my legs!

7.  I can't stand to see a chair rock with nobody in it, like when someone stands up and it keeps rocking. My aunt once told me that it would rock someone's life away, and I can't get that out of my head! I always make sure the chair is still after I stand up.

8.  I love the middle name I've chosen for Garret because it sounds so good all together, but every time I say it, I think of a boy I *hated* in high school.

9.  I didn't crave sweets in this pregnancy until after I got diagnosed with GD. Then again, this was around the same time as Halloween, so the huge bag of snack sized candy bars in my kitchen may have something to do with it.

10.  I'm obsessively checking the Pers42 website, Facebook and Twitter feeds to see if they have made any announcements regarding DH's slate. I'm ready to know!!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #61

1. A word that always makes me laugh is doo-doo. I'm embarrassed just writing that, and I'm sorry for being crude. But every single time I hear that word, I think of one of my brothers saying it when he was about 6, and it makes me laugh so hard.

2. If you looked in my refrigerator right now, the oldest thing you'd find is a container of low-fat cream cheese that's been in there for probably 4 months. I was on a health kick before we left for the mainland, and before I found out I was pregnant. When we got back from visiting family, we got hardcore into giving KB high fat items, so that cream cheese just hasn't been touched since then. I also sort of fell off my healthy wagon.

3.  If I were written about in the newspaper today, on the front page, the headline would say "Pregnant woman finds out she has gestational diabetes and crawls into a hole for three days" --  Seriously, I just don't even feel like talking about it. I even had a blog all planned, but I figure I'll wait until I'm a little less bitter to write it.

4. The last movie I saw was 50/50. At least I tried to see 50/50.. Jason and I were both so tired that we only made it about 30 minutes in before we left.

5. The best thing that happened to me in the last few weeks was ----  finding out that we are having a baby boy!

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #60

I always feel like I'm 23 years old, but in reality I'm almost 27 years old. Where did the time go? At least the past 4 years - where did they go?  Sometimes things happen in my day (like, you know.. changing a diaper, cleaning up diced avocado, vacuuming for the 3rd time...) that make me seriously question how I got here so quickly.  I'm not exaggerating when I say it feels like just yesterday that I was blowing off class to go to happy hour.

I wish my family understood better when I tell them - And here, I've got nothin.  You name it, my family (both sides) is understanding about it. For instance:
We won't be home for Christmas.
I can't tell you when or where Jason's next port call is, or when he's coming home.
We've decided to get pregnant again while KB is still under a year old.
Our next duty station might be across the country from you. (We're still pulling for Millington, don't worry!)
We're spending 5 days of our two weeks home in another state to go to a wedding.
We can't come home to visit because we have to move to Hawaii that week.
Seriously, we have been extremely blessed with families who just get it.

If you saw me when I'm all dressed up for a night out you'd think I was a total girly-girl, but if you saw me when I was 12, played soccer on a boy's team and had a terrible haircut to match, you'd think I was a total tomboy.

I feel like I'm in a totally different universe when (2 answers here:) 1. I meet women who don't have real opinions, who kowtow to their husbands' ideas whether they be good or bad, who haven't taken the time to educate themselves on real issues and current events.  Now, no one get offended - this hasn't happened to me in a long time. But when it has in the past, I was just floored at how submissive and ignorant some women are. I just don't understand!
2. When I'm around people who don't care about college sports, for whatever reason.  WHAT?! What do you mean you "don't have a team"?? And did I hear you say you DON'T LIKE FOOTBALL??  Leave my sight, demon!  -  Seriously, it just doesn't make sense to me. My girliest of girl-friends all still love football, watch play for play just like their husbands/boyfriends/brothers, and will scream at a ref when he needs to be screamed at. Maybe it's just a Southern thing?

In honor of this being MFF #60..... 60 months ago, exactly 5 years ago (so on September 20, 2006), I lived in beautiful Oxford, Mississippi where I was a Senior at Ole Miss and my life was totally different because Uh. Remember the first paragraph you read? I was a Senior in college. I ditched class for happy hour at Parrish's... or just to nap.  I had this super easy job on campus where I could just sleep at my desk a lot of mornings. Exactly 5 years ago was the weekend before my 22nd birthday, and Jason drove down from Memphis to take me out. He was so, so sweet! He bought me the John Mayer Continuum CD and took me to dinner at one of my favorite restaurants on the Square. So that part is the same.. I have this awesome guy making plans for my birthday. (Which is Sunday!!)

MilSpouse Fiday Fill-In #58

Right now, our weather is a little rainy, but what I'd really like is 70ish, sunny, with the smell of burning wood in the air and leaves falling off trees.
I like to let my hair down and go to sleep. Because that's the only time my hair comes down. Unless you've ever had a hair-pulling toddler, you don't get to judge.
Mommy Rambles made a post about heroes... my hero is  my honey, because he takes his job so seriously, and does what he needs to do without (much) complaint. I do the complaining for him :).
It's a weird combination, but I swear  'Nilla Wafers  and peanut butter  are a perfect pair!
Some may see the glass half empty and others may see it half full, but I just see yet another glass that's been left sitting around my house somewhere, and I need to clean it. Again.

MilSpouse Friday Fill-In #56

My plans for this weekend include attending a party with friends but what I’d really like to do is
- sit in the Grove with a ton of drunken idiots. Holy moly, I miss Mississippi right now. I miss Oxford. I miss Ole Miss. I miss the smell of pine straw and magnolias. I miss making fun of idiot girls running around hotter-than-Hades Mississippi in Ugg boots.. with Nike shorts and extra large fraternity t-shirts. I miss Rebel football more than anyone could understand, unless said anyone has also moved away and been unable to get back for a single game in 2 seasons. It's heartbreaking.

I consider the Labor Day holiday
- a reason to hang out with friends and eat a ton of food. But isn't that the point of most holidays, at least to some extent?

My favorite meal for cookouts is grilled everything, but my ??? wouldn’t agree. - Sorry, but I don't know anyone who doesn't agree here.

So far, my favorite part of summer has been spending time with my little family. This is the first summer that Jason and I have been together more than we've been apart. I've loved every minute!

When it comes to deployments, my philosophy is "time flies when you're having fun."  - You HAVE TO keep busy! This is a little easier when your husband is part of a sea command, I think, at least in the Bubble Head community. We are a small, close-knit little group, so we take care of each other. We plan shopping trips, dinners, lunches, drinks on someone's patio.. anything to keep our minds off the fact that we haven't gotten so much as an email in weeks.
